Men's Golf at the NECC Championship

The Babson College men's golf team will compete in the 2016 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship on Saturday and Sunday at Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston, Mass. The winner of the 36-hole stroke play tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Championship at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Wachusett Country Club is a 6,567-yard par-72 golf course built in 1927 by famed course designer Donald Ross.
2015 NECC CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Sophomore Riley Whitham closed with a 1-under par 71 on his way to earning medalist honors as the Beavers captured their second consecutive NECC title. Whitham was named player and rookie of the year after finishing with a 36-hole total of even-par 144 to finish 10 strokes ahead of sophomore Benjamin Crawford, who shot 77-77 on his way to earn All-NECC accolades. Junior Ian Notkin (83-75) tied for fourth and classmate Kyle Alexander (80-81) came in eighth for Babson, which posted a team total of 617 to finish 52 shots clear of second-place Elms.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Babson has won two of its last three events after finishing with a team score of 292 to claim a 14-shot victory at the Westfield State Invitational on Tuesday. First-year Martin Jensen took medalist honors with a 1-over par 72, while junior Pranav Mohan and sophomore Lukas Linemayr both finished a shot back after shooting 73. Three-time NECC Rookie of the Week Chris Bornhorst has a 75.33 stroke average of his first six rounds, while fellow first-year David Choi owns a 76.80 average and has shot 77 or better in four straight rounds. Linemayr (77.43) has three top-20 finishes in four events and Notkin (78.00) tied for 16th at Trinity and 20th at Middlebury to open the season.
PREVIEWING THE FIELD
Two-time runner up Elms boasts a pair of all-conference honorees in juniors Brian Cowles and Mike Fleury, while Springfield, which slipped to fifth at last season's championship, is led by junior Travis Price, a 2015 All-NECC selection, and classmate Greg Allen, who claimed all-league honors in 2014. Daniel Webster senior Clint Goodwin enters the weekend looking to earn his fourth straight all-conference award.
The Beavers' team score of 292 at Tuesday's Westfield State Invitational was their lowest total since opening the first round of the 2011 NECC Championship with a 289.
ON THE MOVE
Following a two-year stint at Stow Acres Country Club, the NECC Championship moves to Wachusett C.C., which becomes the seventh venue to host the league's tournament since 2009.
