Late Rally Helps No. 3/4 Trinity Take Season Opener from No. 18/17 Baseball, 6-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Sophomore Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh and doubled home two more as part of a four-run eighth as No. 3 D3baseball.com/No. 4 Collegiate Baseball Trinity University defeated No. 18 D3baseball.com/No. 17 Collegiate Baseball Babson College, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night.

Senior Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) had two hits, classmate Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) singled and scored, and junior Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) reached base twice and drove in a run for the Beavers. Senior Michael Genaro (Greenwich, Conn.) suffered the loss after giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out three over 6.2 innings.

Wisniewski was 2-for-4 with two RBI and junior Michael Goodrich (Gilbert, Ariz.) and first-year MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif.) both homered for the Tigers. Junior Mark Tindall (Houston, Texas) picked up his first win of the year with 1.1 scoreless innings of work in relief of senior Jeff Lonnecker (Bellaire, Texas), who gave up just one run on five hits while fanning five in 5.2 innings.

After stranding a pair of runners in each of the first two innings, Gill led off with a single and stole second before coming around to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead on Harrington's one-out RBI knock through the right side in the top of the third. Genaro allowed just one hit through 3.1 innings, but Goodrich hammered a 1-0 pitch off the scoreboard in left for a solo homer to pull Trinity even in the last of the fourth.

The Tigers broke the deadlock in the seventh as Wisniewski stroked a one-out single to right center and moved to second on a walk before racing home to make it 2-1 on a two-out RBI single by junior Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas). Harrington was thrown out trying to steal second following a lead-off walk in the top of the eighth, and Trinity tacked on four insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.

Wisniewski drove in a pair with a two-out double to left center and Metz smacked a two-run homer to left. Sophomore Corey Cater (Sacramento, Calif.) struck out three in two perfect innings of relief to earn his first save of the season.

The teams return to the diamond for game two of their series on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
