BABSON PARK, Mass.—Recent Babson College baseball pitcher John Floegel '18 signed an independent league contract and made his professional debut with the Santa Fe Fuego of the Pecos League earlier this week. Floegel becomes the second Beaver to sign with the club joining former teammate Ryan Arena '18 on the active roster.
"I was at a Red Sox game with my senior teammates when I got a call from the (Santa Fe) manager," said Floegel. "The team needed starting pitching and Ryan dropped my name. I wasn't sure initially if I was going to play, but being surrounded by my former teammates when I got the call added to the excitement of the opportunity."
Floegel made his debut on Monday night giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out six over 5.0 innings to pick up the victory in the Fuego's 19-3 win over Garden City (Kan.). He threw 56 of his 98 pitches for strikes and allowed just a solo home run after the first inning.
"Getting the win was a good feeling," Floegel commented. "You see the effort and grind that the guys out here put in and you do your best to match their intensity." Despite the high-scoring nature of the league, Floegel is unfazed adding, "it's certainly a league that requires a pitcher to throw selflessly and trust that your team will catch the same offensive breaks as your opponent."
Floegel is coming off a senior campaign that saw him go 4-2 with a 3.26 earned run average and a career-high 61 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched. The hard-throwing righty led the Green and White with a pair of complete-game shutouts and wrapped up his four-year career with an overall mark of 10-6 to go along with a 3.90 career ERA.
For Arena, who has batted .439 with 13 extra-base hits, 20 RBI and 29 runs scored over his first 19 games, having Floegel join the Fuego is exciting. "It's such an awesome feeling being able to share this experience with one of my best friends," he commented.
Winners of six in a row, the Fuego (21-22) host the Alpine (Texas) Cowboys to begin a 10-game homestand on Friday night.
