BABSON PARK, Mass.—After capturing its second consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship last Sunday, Babson College earned the second seed in the York (Pa.) Regional when the 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament field was announced overnight.
The Beavers (32-10), who are making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, will open play in the eight-team double-elimination bracket against seventh-seeded Catholic University (31-13) at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday at PeoplesBank Park. Top-seeded Rowan University (33-9) will take on eighth-seeded Castleton University, third-seeded Arcadia University (30-14) faces sixth-seeded Union College (30-11), and fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan (28-14) will oppose fifth-seeded Misericordia College (31-12) in the other first round matchups. The tournament will continue through the weekend with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Appleton, Wis., over Memorial Day weekend.
Under the direction of 16th-year head coach Matt Noone, the Green and White has won 11 straight and 25 of its last 28 games going back to late March. The Beavers, who are ranked 25th by Collegiate Baseball and receiving votes in the D3baseball.com poll, reached the Harwich Regional final in 2017.
Catholic won three straight elimination games, including two on Sunday against Scranton University, to claim its first Landmark Conference championship since 2015. The Cardinals are making their third NCAA Tournament appearance.
Babson will play its second game of the tournament on Friday at either 1:15 or 7:45 p.m. against Arcadia or Union.
