Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior David Lennon (Windermere, Fla.) finished the day with four hits and a RBI, while classmate Mark Webber (Norwell, Mass.) and Junior Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) both hit a home run as visiting Babson College dropped both games of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader to Clark University at Granger Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers fell 8-7 in the opener and then suffered an 8-4 setback to the Cougars in game two.

With the loss, Babson slips to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while Clark is now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.

GAME ONE: Clark 8, Babson 7
McHale went 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored, while Lennon went 2-for-2 with a single, a RBI and a run scored. Webber hit a double for two RBI and scored a run.

Junior Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) earned the win for the Cougars after allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks in 6.0 innings, while senior Teddy Downing (Cambridge, Mass.) came in for the save, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing two runs and striking out one batter. Senior Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) went 3-for-5, two RBI and scored a run, while sophomore Dylan Horn (Sterling, Conn.) went 2-for-5 scoring two runs.

Clark got on board first in the fifth inning with two doubles, two singles, a sac-fly and a passed ball to take a 7-0 lead.

Down 7-0 in the top of sixth with Lennon on second base, McHale hit a homerun to cut the Cougars lead down to five. Sophomore Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J.) brought senior Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y) home as the Beavers trailed 7-3 to close of the inning.

The Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Downing hit a single to bring Horn in to extend their lead to 8-4. The Beavers scored two runs in the seventh, and Webber hitting a double for two RBI in the eighth, but Babson failed to rally.

GAME TWO: Clark 8, Babson 4
Junior Connor Gill (Sterling Mass,) and Lennon both went 2-for-4, while Webber went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Senior John Floegel (Summit, N.J.) allowed five runs, but struck out three batters over 6.1 innings in the loss.

Sophomore Andrew Thibault (Nasua, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, Horn homered for three RBI, and sophomore Nick Jordan (Seaford, N.Y.) hit a double for two RBI. First-year Nick Guarino (New Haven, Conn.) earned his first win of the year allowing just four runs on five hits, and striking out two batters over 6.2 innings. Junior Dan Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) pitched 2.1 innings and struck out three batters to record the save.

Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth after scoring off a passed ball and grounded out, Horn hit a three-run home run to put the Cougars ahead, 5-0.

Down 5-0 in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second, Webber hit a three-run home run of his own to pull the Beavers within two.

Junior Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) scored off a sac-fly by classmate Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) in the top of the seventh, but Clark added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win and earn the sweep.

The Beavers return to action on Monday when they host Plymouth State at 3:30 p.m., while Clark is set to host a doubleheader with Massachusetts Maritime on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.
