BABSON PARK, Mass.—After putting up some of the best power numbers in program history last spring, Babson College senior Ryan Arena (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was named to the D3baseball.com preseason All-America first team at designated hitter on Friday. He becomes the first player in program history to earn D3baseball.com preseason All-America honors going back to 2008.
After seeing action in just 32 games over his first two seasons with the Beavers, Arena had a breakout campaign in 2017. He appeared in 40 games and batted .331 with 13 home runs, 12 doubles, 36 runs batted in and 34 runs scored as the Green and White captured both the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season and conference tournament championships.
A first-team all-conference and all-region selection, Arena set a new Babson single-season record for homers and finished with the program's best slugging percentage (.682) since 2011 last year. He recorded 12 multi-hit games and drove in more than one run on nine occasions. Arena also hit safely in 15 of the Beavers' final 17 contests and drove in at least one run in 15 of the last 16 games.
Babson, which closed the season by winning 16 of its final 18 contests, won a school-record 29 games and reached the NCAA Tournament Harwich Regional final for the first time in program history last May. The Beavers open the 2018 campaign against Otterbein in Port Charlotte, Fla., on March 2.
