Men Claim Fourth Consecutive Season-Opening Title; Women Finish Fifth
HENNIKER, N.H.—The Babson College men's cross country team opened its season with a victory for the fourth consecutive season and the women's squad, despite missing some of its top veterans, posted a fifth-place finish at the New England Mayflower Invitational on Friday evening.
Paced by a third-place individual finish by senior Mark Gulesian (Miami, Fla.), the Beavers topped 10 teams, narrowly edging Colby-Sawyer College, for its fourth win at NEC in as many events. Gulesian finished with a time of 16:41 in the 5k race and was followed by sophomore Will Nemeth (Coplay, Pa.), who came in fifth with a time of 17:05, and junior Ian MacLean (South Hamilton, Mass.), who finished 11th with a time of 17:23. First-year Ryan Colaco (Danville, Calif.) was 16th in his collegiate debut, coming in 14 seconds ahead of sophomore Tim Hatzopoulos (Park Ridge, Ill.), who posted a time of 17:52.
On the women's side, first-year Melanie Plattner (Fort Lee, N.J.) had a terrific debut for the Green and White, coming in eighth with a time of 20:44 in the 5k. Junior April Goya (Oceanside, Calif.) was 26th with a time of 22:28 and sophomore Jinane Gedeon Achi (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) finished 28th in 22:34. First-year Sarah Anthony (Netcong, N.J.) and sophomore Amy Warner (Rockland, Mass.) both had solid debut races for the Beavers, coming in 29th and 46th, respectively.
Both the men's and women's squads will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Northampton, Mass., for the Smith College Invitational at 11 a.m.
