Capalbo, Gulesian Each Notch Second Victory, Men's Cross Country Takes Team Crown at Elms Invitational

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Babson College men's cross country team posted its second victory of the season at the Elms College Blazer Invitaitonal at Chicopee Memorial State Park on Saturday, as the Beavers finished first out of nine scoring teams while taking four of the top five individual spots. Meanwhile, the Beaver women placed two harriers in the top five of their race, resulting in a fourth-place finish out of 13 scoring squads.

On the men's side, Babson won the team event with 23 points, followed by UNE (52), Gordon College (89), The Sage Colleges (117), MCLA (117), Massachusetts Maritime Academy (125), Daniel Webster College (208), Eastern Nazarene College (228) and Mount Ida College (262).

For the second time this year, Beavers' sophomore Mark Gulesian sprinted to a first-place time of 26:30 and set a new course record in the process, besting the previous mark of 27:04 set by Greg Redfield of Johnson & Wales back in 2009.

Gulesian's teammates - junior Nate Kolman, first-year Ian MacLean, and junior Brian deLeon - were the next three finishers, helping Babson secure the top four spots overall. Kolman finished second in 28:07, MacLean followed in third in 28:19, and deLeon came in fourth in 28:26. UNE's Shane Murphy rounded out the top five. 

First-year Chris deLeon finished off Babson's scoring five in 13th place with a time of 29:26. He was followed by junior AJ Skains in 16th in 29:41 and first-year Brian Hickey in 17th in 29:48. Rounding out the Beavers' lineup were senior Chris Pierce with a time of 31:49, first-year Edgar Ocana in 32:54, first-year Dominic Esposito in 30:44, and first-year Kevin Giffels in 35:19.

In the women's 5k competition, UNE finished in first place with 28 points, followed by Gordon (55), Sage (100), Babson (153), MCLA (174), Curry College (191), Eastern Nazarene (193), Elms (193), Mass. Maritime (201), Mount Ida (230), Bay Path College (282), Newbury College (302) and University of St. Joseph (Conn.) (359).

The women's race was won by Babson sophomore Marina Capalbo, who like Gulesian claimed individual honors for the second time this season with a top time of 19:53. Joining her in the top five overall was first-year teammate Kelli Halligan, who placed third at the event with a time of 20:49.

The rest of the Beavers' lineup also faired well on the extremely challenging course, with sophomore Rebekah Miller posting a time of 23:18, junior Alyssa Carelli adding a run of 27:37, and senior Jess Lack and sophomore Blair Ginden recording times of 28:47 and 28:49, respectively.
