NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Babson College men's cross country team competed in their first 8k race of the season on Saturday, as the Beavers finished fourth out of 10 scoring schools at the Smith Invitational. The short-handed women's team also ran at the event, placing 12th out of 14 squads while running only five individuals in their traditional 5k race format.
Sophomore Mark Gulesian once again led the men's team, completing the course in 27:39.40 to come in seventh out of 110 harriers. He was followed by junior Brian deLeon in 20th place with a time of 28:55.00, first-year Ian MacLean in 22nd in 29:02.36, and juniors Nate Kolman and AJ Skains in 23rd and 28th place with runs of 29:05.53 and 29:43.76. A group of five first-years rounded out the list of Babson competitors, with first-year Chris deLeon leading the quartet in 33rd place with a time of 29:55.17.
The scoring five for the women's team consisted of first-year Kelli Halligan, who placed 40th with a new career-best time of 22:08.04, sophomore Rebekah Miller, who came in 95th in 24:21.10, sophomore Jessica Santiago, who finished 136th in 30:10.22, sophomore Blair Ginden, who placed 141st in 31:31.73, and sophomore Hailey Walsh, who camed in 143rd in 33:20.77.
Both teams will compete again next Saturday, when they head south to run in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational at 11:15 a.m.
