BABSON PARK, Mass.—As the College's largest capital fund project to date nears completion, the Babson Recreation and Athletics Complex (BRAC) has taken significant strides on both the exterior and interior of the building.
The $52 million BRAC project will nearly double the size of Babson's current athletics and recreation facilities. Highlights include a 10,000-square foot fitness area with state-of-the-art cardio equipment and weight room, multipurpose studio spaces, dedicated varsity locker rooms, three courts for recreational sports, improved locker room facilities for all students, and a large, flexible space to host major college events in any season.
Over the summer, the Webster Center was closed and locker rooms were fully renovated with finishes, new lockers and air conditioning. Two visiting team locker rooms were constructed and vending was moved to the second floor adjacent to the athletics staff office suite.
New glass was installed at the lower level entrance and corridor finishes were updated with new flooring and paint. The equipment room received a facelift and sports medicine was moved to a temporary location until the newly constructed space is complete.
Throughout the summer and into the fall, the exterior façade of the new addition progressed substantially with masonry, windows, and roofing installation.
While the exterior of the building is being completed, the interior is rapidly moving forward with plumbing, fire protection, mechanical and electrical systems, wall framing, and drywall all happening at once.
During the winter months, the majority of work is being focused on the interior as framing and drywall are completed and additional finishes are added. Entering the spring season, paint, tile, flooring, ceilings, and plumbing fixtures will be ongoing in all new construction areas.
"We're beginning our 100th year with great momentum," said Pamela P. and Brian M. Barefoot Athletics Director Mike Lynch. "The magnitude and appearance of this facility when entering the west gate is staggering. Every time I have the privilege of touring BRAC I continue to be impressed and excited for what the future holds for every member of the Babson community."
The BRAC project is slated to be completed for the fall of 2019 as part of Babson's Centennial Celebration.
