Men's Rugby 7s Advance to NSCRO Final Four in Second Straight National Championship Appearance
BABSON PARK, Mass.—After claiming a spot at the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) National Championship for the second consecutive season in late April, the Babson College men's 7s squad capped a historic 2017 campaign by reaching the semifinals and finishing fourth earlier this month in Philadelphia.
Despite suffering a 22-20 loss to Colby in the Northeast Regional Championship, the Beavers responded with five wins at the Central Region qualifying tournament, which included a victory over national power Susquehanna in the final to book a second straight trip to nationals on April 22.
The Green and White dropped its opening game of pool play to St. Mary's, but bounced back with a 19-12 victory over Duke and a 21-7 triumph over Solano Community College (Calif.) on June 3 to advance to the championship round for the first time. Babson fell in its its semifinal matchup to eventual national champion Christendom (Va.) and suffered a two-point loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the third-place game, but placed Matt Renzi and Joshua Sapers on the All-Championship team and finished the spring at 21-6-1.
The NSCRO Men's 7s National Championship was hosted in conjunction with the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship for the fifth consecutive year. The Beavers were one of 74 programs with a male enrollment of less than 4,500 students to compete in one of eight qualifying tournaments.
